Please tell us about your degree and what you are studying.
I am getting a Master’s degree in environmental science at APU (MSES program), focusing on understanding the morphological and genetic variability of Hawaiian bobtail squid.
Why did you choose APU?
I chose APU because I wanted to get a research-heavy master’s degree in biology or environmental science where I could focus on studying cephalopods. Professor Scheel at APU has done a lot of work in cephalopod ecology, so it was a good fit. I also liked the idea of living in Alaska for a couple of years to be close to some relatives.
What was your favorite aspect of studying at APU?
My favorite aspects of studying at APU were the independence I had throughout my thesis project and the programming and coding skills that Professor Jason Geck and Roman Dial incorporated into their courses. These skills improved my thesis work and should be valuable for my future career.
Reflecting on your time at APU, what stands out as the most memorable or impactful part of your campus life or learning experience?
A standout experience from my time at APU was participating in Professor Polly Hyslop’s course, “Indigenous Perspectives of Science.” This course was a breath of fresh air dedicated to incorporating indigenous knowledge and values into scientific research, and many stories and lessons from that course will stay with me for a long time.
What are your post-graduation plans?
I am starting a Ph.D. program in biology at Temple University in the fall. I enjoyed research at APU and am excited to continue in that world for my next step.
