About Pre-Med
Mentoring is a foundation of your Pre-med program at APU.
Pre-med students like you benefit from APU’s rigor with a difference.
From your Pre-med orientation to internship experiences, from your MCAT preparation sessions to your demonstration project, you’ll develop working relations on and off campus to mentor you along the way.
And when it’s time to pursue your dreams beyond APU, you’ll depart with meaningful recommendations that help distinguish your application to medical schools.
Pre-med at APU meets the standard pre-requisites for medical school admission. That’s the rigor. Here’s the difference:
Expect small classes in the courses you need most.
Medical schools are looking for demonstrated academic success, especially in classes like biology, chemistry and physics.
While other places may rely on teaching assistants and crowded classrooms, at APU each Pre-med course is taught by full-time APU faculty. Intentionally small class sizes are designed to maximize your learning.
No school can guarantee your performance in every class. Pre-med at APU combines challenging courses, effective teaching and personalized mentoring to help keep you motivated.
Expect to learn from health care professionals in unparalleled settings.
We offer practicum and internship experiences that incorporate Alaska as your classroom. You’ll gain a diversified perspective and a competitive edge at medical school application time.
Pursue a practicum at the Alaska Native Medical Center, a unit of the federal Indian Health service and Alaska’s only Level II trauma center. APU’s partnership with Providence Medical Center introduces you to the state’s largest hospital, encompassing a cancer center, children’s hospital and family medicine.
Alaska Pacific University’s main campus is within the Anchorage U-Med District, including both Providence and the Alaska Native Medical Center.
Expect to graduate with an academic record that goes beyond test scores.
Your Pre-med capstone project is self-assigned research that gives you practice in traits you’ll rely on in your medical career.
Completed in your senior year with guidance from your Pre-med adviser, your senior project is in-depth study. It demonstrates your ability to observe accurately, reason logically and communicate clearly.
Your Pre-med senior project is grounded in your major. If your bachelor’s degree is in the natural sciences, for instance, your project might have you investigating behaviors of Alaska marine mammals or water quality at an Anchorage-area glacier. Senior projects stemming from any APU degree are suitable for your Pre-med track.
You’ll graduate with applied learning and a self-directed demonstration project that can help your transcript stand out.
Expect test preparation that works for you – at no extra cost.
If you’re like other pre-med students, you’re already looking ahead to the MCAT, the Medical College Admission Test.
It assesses your understanding of science concepts and principles as well as problem solving, critical thinking and writing. Each of these is emphasized in your Pre-med curriculum in addition to the natural sciences. Your day-to-day APU coursework offers regular practice in communication and reasoning skills that medical schools are seeking.
APU test preparation workshops are available at no extra cost – our commitment to helping Pre-med students like you gain a competitive edge.
