Bill Simeone has lived in Alaska for 50 years. Ten years ago he began painting life size portraits of Alaska Native people from the upper Tanana and Copper Rivers. The intent of these paintings is to expose the artist’s vision of Native people as sophisticated personalities, in control of their world. The paintings aim to nudge the viewer to consider the potential meanings behind Alaska Native culture and history. Major influences in Simeone’s paintings include the artist Fritz Scholder, T.C. Cannon, Alice Neel, and Jordan Casteel. Simeone paints with acrylics either on plywood or Arches watercolor paper.
