Coming soon to a rink near you, AMU & APU Hockey Reunion Game! On July 27, the AMU Hockey team from the early 1970s will be on campus celebrating their 50th reunion, organized by former AMU hockey goalie, Mike Moeglein (’73). After some campus tours, lunch, and ‘state of the U.’ updates, we are hosting a first of its kind AMU and APU exhibition hockey game at the Royal Business Center Ice Rink (formerly the Subway Center), 11111 O’Malley Center Dr., 4:15 – 5:15 p.m. on the red rink.
A few of the original AMU team alumni are going to play, and we are looking to host two teams of 16 players plus goalies. The game is open to the community, so we are encouraging if you or someone you know is interested in playing, to please register online at https://apuamualumni.funraise.org/ Questions or comments, please call Laurie Evans-Dinneen at 907-564-8880 or Christopher Deen at 907-564-8282.
Player fee of $55 includes ice time (one game), commemorative jersey, buffet at the Blue Line Pub for player and +1 guest, and two drink tickets. While the original AMU jerseys were black and gold, the teams will be broken out into blue and gold.
We are encouraging faculty, staff, students, and alumni who have played hockey to consider joining this fun event with the potential to become an annual game! Please feel free to forward this announcement.
Excerpts from the former AMU yearbooks on hockey team:
1967-1968 – a team of “rag tag skaters” form first official AMU hockey team.
1968-1969 – “Hockey fever hits campus!” And the team started becoming a competitive force.
1969-1970 – 14 skaters, Brush Christianson is on the team, and they “win it all!” The entry ends, “Hockey is here to stay at AMU.”
