Please tell us about your degree and what you are studying.
I’ll be receiving my B.S. in environmental public health (EPH), which is a branch of public heath related to the natural and built human environment. Essentially, it’s about making sure that the air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat, and the places we inhabit (home, work, and school) are safe.
Why did you choose APU?
I chose APU specifically for the EPH program. I transferred to APU in my junior year because I knew I wanted to come back home (AK) for work, so having a program I was passionate about in the place I love the most made it a great fit.
What was your favorite aspect of studying at APU?
My favorite aspect of APU is the smaller class sizes. My program is especially small, so it’s not unusual for me to be in a class of three or fewer. This has meant that I’ve really gotten to know my professors, and I’ve really never had to compete to get help from them or feel intimidated in getting to know them. My professors have been wonderful mentors and references for me, and I am incredibly grateful to have gotten to know them.
Reflecting on your time at APU, what stands out as the most memorable or impactful part of your campus life or learning experience?
The most impactful part of my learning experience has been learning from my peers, almost as much as from my professors. APU has a uniquely diverse student body, and students here come from a wide variety of backgrounds. My previous university was almost exclusively 18–22-year-olds, from the same region and socioeconomic background. Having known what that is like, I am more appreciative of the fact that APU students come from all over the world, at different ages, and with varying levels of work experience. It makes our learning experience richer and more well-rounded.
What are your post-graduation plans?
After graduation, I’ll be moving to Dillingham to work for the Bristol Bay Area Health Corporation in their environmental health and injury prevention program. They have a wonderful team out there, and I am excited to join them and serve the Bristol Bay region.
