Why the Tumyaraa Program
The Alaska Pacific University’s Tumyaraa: The Path Bridging Program for Alaska Native high school students, is committed to providing writing and math assistance to prepare participants for college readiness leading to potential for dual credit enrollment. This program is designed to address educational disparities and promote higher education and cultural identity.
Mission
Our mission is to empower Alaska Native high school students to achieve their academic and career goals by providing comprehensive, culturally relevant academic support, mentorship, and access to dual credit programs, ensuring they are well-prepared for college success.
Vision
We envision a future where Alaska Native students have equal access to higher education opportunities and the ability to thrive academically and professionally.
At Alaska Pacific University’s Tumyaraa: The Path Bridging Program, we believe:
- All students can learn.
- All students do not learn the same way.
- Cultural and community support and program designed inclusion are crucial.
- Social-emotional support is essential.
- Cross-cultural experiences are vital.
The goal of this program is to address rural Alaska Native student college-readiness through culturally relevant offerings focused on math and writing.
Program objectives:
- Students will work through these courses to get their skill levels proficient for college level math and writing by Senior year, leading the way to opportunities to enter APU’s Early Honors program, or a traditional post-secondary university enrollment.
- Participants will spend up to three years doing college readiness and cultural self-identity exploration which will promote cultural grounding as an assistive factor in the transition to post-secondary environments and academics.
