Alaska Pacific University hosted its Indigenous Peoples Day celebration on Monday, Oct. 9 at the Moseley Sports Center.
The event was co-hosted by 10 community partners: Alaska Native Heritage Center, Alaska Native Professional Association, Alaska Native Sisterhood Camp 87, Alaska’s People, Alaska Public Interest Research Group, Anchorage School District Indigenous Education Program, Anchorage School District Gui Kima Program, Cook Inlet Tribal Council, Native Village of Eklutna, and University of Alaska Anchorage Native Student Services.
The venue was filled with over 600 attendees and included representation of Alaska Native cultures from across the state. The program showcased various activities, from a lunch buffet to a Dene Hand Games Native Youth Olympics Demonstration, to dance performances by groups such as Aanchich’x Kwaan and Indigenous Leaders of Bartlett. PBS’s Molly of Denali also made an appearance.
The Indigenous Peoples Day celebration was a special occasion for the community to come together, uplift, and share the many vibrant and beautiful Indigenous cultures of the peoples who have thrived in our homelands for over 10,000 years.
Proceeds from the event will be allocated to APU’s Shel ch’naq’ahnilu Fund at alaskapacific.edu/donate to support Indigenous student activities & scholarships for the future.
