On Aug. 10, 2023, community leaders and guests gathered at the Atwood Center’s Rasmuson Hall on the Alaska Pacific University (APU) campus for a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The event marked the official opening of the new Life Jacket Loaner Station, highlighting APU’s dedication to the local boating community’s safety and well-being.
APU, in partnership with the Sea Tow Foundation, a nonprofit organization prioritizing boating and water safety, made this initiative possible.
Situated outside the gear room of the Atwood Center, the new loaner station and life jacket stand offers life jackets to the public free of charge. Available in sizes from child to adult, these life jackets can be borrowed by local boaters and community members, ensuring safety during water-related activities.
The ceremony featured special guest speakers, Veronica Boerger, Tiamuna Program Manager at the Alaska Native Heritage Center and Alaska Pacific University partner, local boy scout troops, and Jeremy Lily, President of Alaska Dive Search and Rescue.
APU President Janelle Vanasse and Provost Hilton Hallock also delivered remarks. President Vanasse highlighted the university’s mission in connecting with the local community and enhancing public safety, and Provost Hallock shared the excitement and anticipation of seeing the project come to life.
Attendees were treated to a BBQ, providing an informal and friendly atmosphere for networking, sharing experiences, and discussing the shared values of safety and community well-being.
