Step Four: Build the project budget
OSP can help develop proposal budgets and cost-share commitments.
Information often needed to draft your project budget is available through the proposal data factsheet. All cost-share commitments require review and approval from your department chair, dean, and/or source of the cost-share commitment.
A budget is a detailed statement of your project’s estimated costs. It should include all direct costs, as well as the calculated indirect costs – also known as Facilities and Administrative (F&A) costs – required to carry out the project. OSP can provide the correct percentage to calculate your project’s indirect costs. Please be aware this is an institutional determination, not an individual project determination.
Each sponsor will have their own guidelines on budget requirements and formatting, allowable costs, and purchase restrictions. If you plan to make vendor purchases with a government grant, check the SAM.gov exclusions list in advance.
APU’s internal budget categories and those of sponsors do not always match. It’s helpful to pay attention to use the sponsor’s budget template or pay attention to their budget categories as you build your project budget.
Uniform Guidance principles apply to all sponsored programs and projects at APU.
Once you have drafted a budget, OSP can support you to review and request approval.
