American Red Cross Swim Instructor Certification

APU offers a unique course over spring break (March 7, 8, 9, 10 – 10 am to 6 pm). Instructor candidates will learn how to teach swimming skills, water safety education and activities for all ages and abilities. They will learn and practice the science-based teaching strategies, skill progressions, stroke mechanics and how to teach the life saving skills of self-rescue to everyone; even those who move, behave or communicate differently.
You can be part of an elite team of instructors working together to reduce the drowning rates of Alaska; while you earn competitive wages and impact lives. If you choose to leave Alaska, this certification is recognized and valid within the United States.
There are two levels of certification; Water Safety Instructor (Must be able to swim all 6 strokes listed below) and Basic Swim Instructor (Must be able to swim first 4 strokes listed.)
APU students, staff, faculty and ANTHC employees receive a significant reduction in course fee.

Course requirements: Must be at least 16 years old and able to pass a level 4 swim stroke test, maintain floating position and tread water for 1 minute.
Level 4 stroke test: 25 yards of Front Crawl, Breaststroke, Elementary Backstroke, Sidestroke and Back Crawl; 15 yards of Butterfly
