Discover Active Learning
APU is offering an American Red Cross Shallow Water Lifeguard course (24 hrs). Lifeguard candidates learn how to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies in shallow water up to 5 feet deep. They also learn how to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until EMS personnel take over.
Lifeguard candidates are required to pass a prerequisite test before registering for the course. This test consists of a 100 yards continuous swim using front crawl and breast stroke and show the ability to bilateral breath. Then a timed brick retrieval and a 2 min tread with out the use of hands.
Once in the course, candidates complete 24 hours of instruction, and must pass a written exam with at least an 80% grade, and a final skills scenario. Upon completion and passing of all elements, candidates are awarded a Shallow Lifeguard Certification for a 2-year period.
