Overview
In honor of Barney Gottstein’s 80th birthday which he celebrated in 2005, Laurence J. and Wilma Carr established this endowed scholarship. Barney was born on Dec. 30, 1925, in Des Moines, Iowa. He enlisted in the Army to fight in World War II, and served in the Army Air Corps. Barney went to the University of Washington after the war, studying to become an aeronautical engineer. There, he met and married Natalie Werner, beloved mother of their five children. Barney shared his mother’s passion for education, supporting education in Alaska. He was Chair of the State Board of Education, and provided financial assistance to hundreds of Alaska Native students through scholarships and underwriting programming. He was also appointed as an inaugural member of the Alaska Human Rights Commission. Barney has received much recognition for his contributions, including being inducted into the Alaska Business Hall of Fame in 1989, and receiving an honorary Doctor of Laws from the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 1991.
Awarding Criteria
