Programs completed at APU: BA in Outdoor Studies with a minor in Environmental Policy
Project Title and what it entails: My senior project is titled “Creating an Energy Portfolio for Alaska Pacific University.” In it, I looked at APU’s current carbon emissions through electricity, natural gas, and campus vehicle fuel usage. I also analyzed our carbon sequestration between main campus and the Kellogg Farm.
Hometown: Anamosa, Iowa
Favorite classes at APU: I really enjoyed Environmental Policy and Assessment with Professor Alex Lee. Here, I learned what goes in to policy making, especially environmental policy. After learning about state’s Renewable Energy Portfolios, I decided that I wanted to create the same thing for APU. I think having this background will help me tremendously in law school.
What is your favorite APU memory? I have really enjoyed working at APU as a resident assistant. This position has allowed me to really connect with all of APU in ways that I otherwise wouldn’t have. While there are challenges with the job, the everlasting friendships created far overshadow the drawbacks.
What is going to be your next adventure post-APU? This summer I will be moving down to Nashville, Tennessee where I will begin school at Belmont University College of Law. Coming to APU, I had no idea what I wanted to do, all I knew is that I wanted a degree in Outdoor Studies. I really want thank Eeva Latosuo and Mike Kaplan for encouraging me to find something that I am passionate about. I will not forget my time at APU while in law school.
Any words of wisdom for students working on completing their degrees? Don’t be afraid to break your norms. We all have an idea of what we want, but sometimes this might not be the best for us. Break this trend and you will grow tremendously. APU is the perfect place for discovering just who you truly are and is complete with the best support system you will ever find.
