Reese Hanneman – skate sprint national champion
Anchorage, AK. It was a thrilling day at Kincaid Park for day 2 of the U.S. National Cross-Country Ski Championships. In the opening qualification sprint (1.6k) round, Logan Hanneman posted the top time of 3:07.40 and brother Reese Hanneman qualified with the 3rd fastest time. APU had 6 men advance to the heats- Logan Hanneman, Reese Hanneman, Tyler Kornfield, Eric Packer, Forrest Mahlen and Scott Patterson. The qualifying round holds extra weight at these championships, as the results of the qualifier will be used for Olympic qualification. Reese Hanneman went on to win his quarter and semi-final before winning the overall National Champion title by winning the final heat! Tyler Kornfield finished 4th in his semi-final but due to the speed of that semi was able to advance as the lucky loser to the final and went on to win the bronze medal in the final. Eric Packer also advanced to the final placing 5th, giving APU men 3 of the top 6 spots on the day!
Logan Hanneman
In the Women’s 1.4k race, APU student-athlete Hannah Halverson was the top APU qualifier (still a Junior racer- U20!) in 4th overall (3rd American). Hannah advanced as the lucky loser from her quarterfinal and went on to place 3rd in her semi-final before finishing 5th overall in the final (3rd American) and top Junior racer! Jessica Yeaton, Rosie Frankowski, Becca Rorabaugh and Chelsea Holmes also qualified for the heats.
APU student-athlete Hunter Wonders placed 2nd in the Junior final and Canyon Tobin finished 3rd. Overall on the day, Hunter finished 6th and Canyon 7th as the Juniors that finished in the overall top 30 went on to compete in the senior heats.
Next up are the distance classic races on Sunday at Kincaid. Racing begins at 10a.m. Final race of the Championships takes place on Monday- Classic Sprint.

Reese Hanneman on his Skate Sprint National Championship Title
“Winning a National Championship here at home, on a beautiful day like this, is one of those days I’ll remember forever. Absolutely epic! The huge crowds of people out there were so loud, and having so many friends, family, coaches, volunteers and supporters made the stoke so high! I honestly feel so humbled and blessed to be able to actually deliver; there’s so much pressure, internal and external, and to actually do it is so satisfying!”

“Qualifying first today was absolutely amazing. After the first two weekends of SuperTour racing, I was sitting in decent placing for the points race for the Olympic Sprint spot. But with the bonus points given here at Nationals, I knew that I needed to win here and was focused solely on just that…winning the qualifier. It has been a pretty rough few weeks with sickness and strange injuries which I am just healing from, so to win today was an absolute miracle! One down, but still a very important one to go on Monday!
The crowd here today was the largest I have ever seen at a ski race in the U.S. The volume of the cheering on the hills during the sprint was stunning, and it really was awesome to see the support of the Anchorage ski community. It’s not often that such big races are up here in Alaska, and so when they are, it’s so cool to see and feel the support of the State.”
