Undergraduate Amber Peterson, ’16, will lead APU’s efforts as students vie for the Hult Prize for young social entrepreneurs. Top prize is $1 million.
“What means a lot to me is being able to spotlight our smart, quick-witted students,” Peterson said. She was named in August.
An Environmental Science major from Pittsburg, New Hampshire, Peterson is a resident adviser and a past president and past vice chair of APU student government. Hult Prize partners include Hult International Business School and the Clinton Global Initiative, established by President Bill Clinton.
Peterson’s first task: Recruit an APU team to develop ideas that can tackle big, solvable global challenges. The APU team will compete in local and regional events.
“The effect of climate change on Alaska Native coastal villages is worthy of attention,” Peterson said. Another idea is trash clean-ups. “With a lot of people helping and a few hours’ work, ecosystems benefit a lot,” she said.
Winning teams receive entrepreneurial training hosted by Hult. Winners compete again at a Clinton Global Initiative event. The top team earns $1 million and sees its idea become a start-up enterprise.
