Alaska Pacific University is now offering graduate students the ability to receive a Master of Science in Outdoor and Environmental Education and a K-8 Teaching Certificate in one program. This option combines classes from the Outdoor Studies and Education Departments to give students a thorough preparation for teaching in public and charter schools with an emphasis in environmental and outdoor education.
The first year of the 45-credit program consists of classes conducted primarily at APU’s Kellogg Farm Campus in Palmer, Alaska, utilizing an experiential approach while maintaining our standards of academically rigor. The second year is spent at APU’s Anchorage Campus preparing for and completing student teaching. Classes will include Outdoor Education Literacy, Teaching Methods, Power of Place, Research Methods, and Curriculum/Instruction/Evaluation.
This career path enables students the flexibility of picking from jobs in public, charter, or private schools; interpretive and education specialist jobs in land management agencies such as the National Park Service or State Parks; and positions in a variety of non-governmental organizations and businesses such as conservation organizations and camps.
