  Three APU skiers named to US Cross Country Ski Team Full Story
 

Members of the APU Ski Team make up a hefty chunk of the women named Thursday to the 16-member U.S. Cross Country Ski Team for the 2008 season. Two-time Olympian and APU student Kikkan Randall, 24,  is the only woman on the five member A team. The Anchorage Daily News announced today that nationally ranked nordic skier Laura Valaas has chosen to join the APU Ski Team. At APU, the 23-year-old will join U.S. Ski Team members and APU students Kikkan Randall and Tazlina Mannix -- both of whom are ranked ahead of her in the USSA rankings. Valaas is ranked No. 3. Together, they combine to give APU nearly as much firepower as the national team.

Two star Alaska Pacific University cross-country skiers added major new achievements to their resumes this winter.

Kikkan Randall, who competed in the 2002 and 2006 Winter Olympics Jan 21 became the first U.S. woman ever to stand on the podium at the World Cup cross-country event. Randall narrowly finished third in a competition at Rybinsk, Russia, about 250 miles north of Moscow.

Mannix, the U.S. Ski Team member who notched several eye-opening performances over the winter, extended her realm to mountain running on Saturday. She soundly beat three-time defending Mount Marathon champion Cedar Bourgeois in the Government Peak Climb, the kick-off race of the annual Alaska Mountain Running Grand Prix.

  Mary Ellen Segelhorst joined other funders and supporters in breaking ground for a new $2.2 million dormitory at Alaska Pacific University (APU) on Friday, July 14. Segelhorst Hall will consist of six, four-bedroom apartments to house 24 APU students, primarily those who are older and prefer apartment-style living to the more traditional dorm environment.   APU Professor Roman Dial and Instructor Jason Geck have successfully reached America's remotest spot, and after a sometimes harrowing and exhausting journey, are back home in Anchorage safe and sound. Dial, Geck and Ryan Jordan of Bozeman, Montana began their trek on June 11, 2006 with the goal of reaching the remotest spot while traveling with ultra light back packs and the bare minimum of supplies.  Craig Medred, of the Anchorage Daily News, interviewed Jason Geck and published a follow-up story about the Arctic 1000 in Sunday's paper.   Follow the link to read more.

The evaluation will be conducted by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, one of six regional accrediting agencies approved by the U.S. Department of Education, and the one having responsibilities for oversight of colleges and universities in the Pacific Northwest. Alaska Pacific University’s last comprehensive evaluation was in the spring of 1996 and its accreditation status was last reaffirmed by the Commission in February 2005.

  Alaska Pacific University president Doug North lived like a fish out of water this week -- a very big fish in a very tiny waterless bowl. North and his wife, APU professor Ellen Cole, ditched their fancy digs at the posh president's house for a narrow concrete-walled dorm room at South Atwood Hall. This meant sleeping on standard-issue twin beds, eating in the dining hall, obeying quiet hours, and shooting pool and watching TV in the dorm's lounge area downstairs.

The strategy is relatively ineffective here, against the glass corners of an aquarium in researcher David Scheel’s lab. But back home in Prince William Sound, the giant Pacific octopus pulls a far more successful disappearing act, only coming out of its den to feed. The habit makes it a frustrating creature to follow, especially in frigid Alaska waters.

  SOLDIER HOLLOW, Utah (Feb. 24 USSA News) - Nina Kemppel (APU Nordic Ski Center) moved into the top-15 of today's 30K cross country ski race after the disqualification of two Russians for testing positive for use of performance enhancing drugs.

Her finish now becomes the best-ever individual finish in U.S. women's cross country history. The previous best was 16th in 1972 by Martha Rockwell in the 10K.

"I was shooting for a top-15 today all along," said Kemppel. "It's great to end my Olympic career with one of the best races of my life."
