Information for Eco League Students coming to APU

Welcome to Alaska Pacific University! Although we are similar in size and overarching principles to the other members of the Eco League Consortium, our educational philosophy and superb location make APU a unique and ideal place to choose for your Eco League semester. First and foremost, we are a Liberal Arts college which seeks to enrich the lives of our students through exposure to different cultures, different teaching styles, and different ways of thinking. Our motto of "Active Learning" permeates our classes, our community, and extends to encompass our surrounding environment.

To achieve our goals and exemplify our motto we offer a unique Block and Session semester format. In the Block you take only one course for four weeks; in the Session students generally take 3 courses for 11 weeks. Block courses allow you to study a subject intensively without distraction from other courses. It is also an opportunity for you to travel, to become immersed in cultures different from your own, and to learn from direct experience. Whether students are reading Kant: The Critique of Judgment in German Romanticism, exploring the Louvre in Paris, or climbing glaciated mountains in the Alaska Range; they are engaging in the world and igniting a lifelong passion for adventure and learning.

When our students are not in a classroom, they often venture into the great outdoors. APU is fortunate enough to be located in an urban setting with access to both cultural experience and wild land adventure. We are home to miles of trails that connect to trail systems that weave throughout Anchorage. We are also a ten to twenty minute drive from the Chugach Mountains; a hiker and backpacker's paradise. Within two hours students can be ice climbing, rock climbing, fishing, sea kayaking, and running world class rivers; all in sparsely accessed wilderness areas.
