![]() Master of Science in Environmental ScienceThe Master of Science in Environmental Science (MSES) program at Alaska Pacific University is designed as a two-year, 36 credit curriculum. The program emphasizes developing students into practicing environmental scientists and policy informants. Students from diverse backgrounds have succeeded in the program, a program that offers small, active classes and reliable guidance during the thesis phase. Thesis projects have spanned a wide range of topics in the twelve year-old program. After completing the program, students have gone on to a broad range of careers. The science portion emphasizes both knowledge and practical field abilities in biology, chemistry, and geology. The policy portion emphasizes the historical development of current policies, agreements, laws, and regulations, as well as their use and effects. After APUAfter graduating from the MSES program, students have been quite successful in establishing their careers in the environmental science field. Some have gone on to Ph.D. programs. Others have taken private sector jobs with environmental consulting and environmental engineering firms. A third track has taken students into non-government organizations such as the Nature Conservancy, while still others have been successful in state and federal agencies like the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, US Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Park Service. Student BackgroundsCurrent and previous students have been admitted from a diverse array of backgrounds. Undergraduate degrees in environmental studies, biology, and geology are common, as are students with educations in political science, economics, philosophy, mathematics, engineering, and even journalism. A necessary admission requirement is the willingness to confront the challenge and reward of undertaking a research project that consumes roughly one-half to two-thirds of the educational time spent in the program. Students from non-science backgrounds may be advised to take some science and/or statistics classes prior to arrival or during their first semester. |
