Certificate of Graduate Studies in Investments

Global finance is the science of managing money in a multi-national, transglobal environment. This Alaska Pacific MBA concentration is designed specifically to extend the principles of finance to an international setting and to explore issues peculiar to conducting business in an integrated global economy.

Central to the study is the understanding of world markets and how currencies affect trading. At Alaska Pacific University, students gain an understanding of global economic changes, focusing intently upon the shifting landscape from the "old" to the "new" economy that is rapidly evolving with technology.

Alaska Pacific University is one of the best places to learn these skills.

Why? Uniquely situated to take advantage of the global economy, Alaska is the same distance from Tokyo as it is to London. In fact, Alaska's time zone gives us the advantage of being able to trade with all markets in real time. Alaska's proximity to the dynamic and burgeoning economies of the Pacific Rim and its economic ties to these countries combine to provide Alaska with a competitive advantage in developing global business skills and the acumen. Multi-national companies and governmental agencies at the forefront of global trade are actively recruiting portfolio managers with the specific management, technical, and cross-cultural understanding that is necessary for successful global economic interaction.

Knowledgeable and practical leaders in their fields, Alaska Pacific University business faculty, known for their effective and innovative graduate teaching, will be teaming with experienced members of the business community to bring the latest in theory and practical applications. They have extensive practical experience in a variety of global economic and business environments. In addition, interaction with your fellow students will further add to your graduate studies as they will bring a breadth of experience to the classroom, the team projects, the case studies and, above all else, the collaborative use of our trading room.

Alaska Pacific University is a leader in experiential learning. Although learning can certainly occur in classroom lecture, we believe that true understanding only occurs through experience. You will be expected to develop your own extensive portfolio while you are developing strategies that are meaningful in a real world financial context.

Through a generous gift from McKinley Capital Management, Alaska Pacific is one of the few graduate programs in finance to provide its students with the best research tools in the industry: Factset and Bloomberg Terminals.

Of course we expect all candidates to display a passion for investment strategies and a concern for global economic balance. It is very important, however, that prospective students realize that this program requires the development of more advanced quantitative skills than does a general business program. Often, the most successful financial managers were undergraduate math, computer science, and engineering majors.

Success in this program is highly dependent on one's quantitative skills. We expect students to have mastered statistical analysis at the undergraduate level. To measure that mastery, all candidates will be expected to sit for a quantitative assessment prior to acceptance in the program.

Therefore, entry into the program is highly competitive. We are seeking students who show promise of significant achievement in equities trading.
